The folder settings page enables you to control the actions possible within a specific folder, and modify the default settings to better suit your needs. Sub-folders inherit these folder settings, and the settings cannot be ‘undone’ at a sub-folder level. Some settings can be modified only by folder owners and co-owners. To modify folder settings:
  1. Hover over a folder and click More Options (more-options-button). (Or right-click on a folder.)
  2. Click Settings.

Collaboration Section

The settings in this section are configurable by folder Owners and Co-Owners.

Invitation Restrictions

Invitation restrictions settings also apply to all files in the folder.

Only folder owners and co-owners can send collaborator invitesDetermines who can send collaborator invites to the folder. If enabled, users with the access level of editor or below are not able to invite collaborators into this folder.
Restrict collaboration to within [your organization]Determines who can be collaborated into the folder. If enabled, only users within your organization are able to join this folder as collaborators.
Allow anyone who can access this folder from a shared link to join as a collaborator

Determines whether users who follow a shared link to this folder are prompted to join as collaborators. If enabled, also select the access level for these users:

  • Editor (default)
  • Viewer

Note

Any permissions and restrictions placed on the shared link still apply.

Commenting

Commenting settings are available only to Enterprise-level accounts.

Disable commenting for this folder

Determines whether people can leave comments and annotations on content in this folder. If enabled:

  • Existing comments and annotations on content in this folder are hidden.
  • New comments and annotations cannot be added.

Note

Comment creators can modify or delete existing hidden comments. Any such modification or deletion remains hidden while this setting is enabled. When this setting is disabled, modified comments display.
Shared Link Access
Only collaborators can access this folder via shared linksDetermines whether people who access the folder via a shared link must also be collaborators in the folder.

Privacy Section

Hide collaborators and their activity from non-owners

Determines who can view collaborators and their activity in the folder. If enabled, only the folder owner and co-owners are able to view collaborators and their activity in the folder.

This setting also removes the ability for non-owners and non-co-owners to invite collaborators.

Watermarking Section

The settings in this section are configurable by folder Editors.

Watermark Folder

Enable watermarking for this folder

Determines whether content in this folder can be watermarked.

Watermarking places a semi-transparent overlay of the current viewer’s username and time of access across a document. Box Notes, video, audio, Flash, and 3D files are currently not supported.

Uploading Section

The settings in this section are configurable by Owners, Co-Owners and Editors.

Email Uploads

Allow uploads to this folder via email

Determines wheter people can opt to upload content to this folder via email. If selected:

  • Enter a valid email address.
  • Decide whether you want to allow email uploads only from collaborators on the folder.

To upload to the folder via email, attach a file to an email, and send the to the email address generated.

Overwrite files with the same name when uploading by email or widget

Determines whether files with the same name are overwritten when they are uploaded via email or widget.

Configurable only by owners and co-owners.

Automated Actions Section

Delete or Unshare

Auto-delete this folder on a selected date

Determines whether  this folder is automatically deleted on the selected date. If enabled, also select a deletion date.

Note

When a folder is auto-deleted, no notifications are sent to the owner or collaborators on the folder.

Only Owners can enable this setting for the root folder. Owners, Co-owners, and Editors can enable this setting for sub-folders.

Unshare this folder on a selected date

Determines whether this folder is automatically unshared on the selected date. If enabled, also select an unshare date.

When a folder is auto-unshared:

  • Collaborators remain in the folder. However, the shared link expires.
  • This applies only to the particular folder to which the setting is applied. The setting does not affect shared links to files or sub-folders in the folder. 

Only Owners and Co-Owners can enable this setting.

Email and Notifications Settings

Notifications

Determines who receives notifications as the result of events in this folder. Select from:

  • Use my default notification settings - To receive notifications according to your notification preferences in your Account Settings.
  • Override default settings for this folder and all subfolders - To set custom notification preferences for the folder. If enabled, also select:
    • Disable all email notifications for all collaborators - To disable all email notifications for this folder and all subfolders, and also disable the ability to select notification events. Only Owners and Co-Owners can select this option.
    • Which events in the folder and sub-folders will generate notifications (available only when Disable all email notifications for all collaborators is disabled), from:
      • Previews
      • Downloads
      • Uploads
      • Deletes (selected by default)
      • Adds a comment (selected by default)
You can adjust email notifications at enterprise-wide, account-wide, and folder-specific levels.
  • Enterprise-wide email notifications: When email notifications are applied in the Admin Console, this becomes the default for all newly created end users until the end user adjusts their settings.
  • Individual account-wide email notifications: When email notifications are applied in Account Settings, this becomes the default notification setting for all newly-created folders in the account OR for folders that are set to Use my default notification settings.
  • End users in a Box instance can have different account wide settings by manually adjusting their email notification settings.
  • Folder-specific level email notifications: When email notifications are applied in Folder Settings, this becomes the default email notification for all files in the folder and subfolders.
  • Different users collaborating in a folder can set their own specific folder-level email notifications (if allowed by the folder owner).
